Mister Smooth finds the harsh, ringing frequencies in a track or a whole mix and pulls them down only while they stick out, then gently balances the tone of the mix toward the curve you choose. Synth leads stop piercing, vocals stop whistling on their s's, cymbals stop fizzing, and the rest of the sound is left alone.
FAST FOURIER TRANSFORM, SHAPED BY THE GOLDEN RATIO
Under the hood Mister Smooth splits the audio into 2048 frequency bands with a fast Fourier transform (4096 at 88.2 and 96 kHz), 75 percent overlap, linked stereo. Its detector is shaped by the golden ratio: the smoothing window is phi to the minus three times Selectivity octaves wide, peaks are clipped at phi squared dB above the spectral envelope so a resonance can't hide itself, the cut spreads to neighbouring bands with weights of phi to the minus distance, the balance bands sit the square root of phi apart, and the default release is the attack times phi to the fifth. Even the window is 1040 by 643 pixels, a golden rectangle.
SMOOTH ONLY WHAT STICKS OUT
Depth sets how much it takes off. Selectivity sets how narrow a peak has to be before it counts. Focus Low and Focus High choose the range it works on, and you can drag that band straight on the spectrum display. Attack and Release set how fast it grabs and lets go. Press DELTA to hear only what it removes, so you can be sure it is taking the harshness and nothing else.
BALANCE THE WHOLE MIX
Balance slowly moves the overall tone of the mix toward a Natural, Warm, Bright or Club curve. It cuts up to 6 dB where there is too much and only gently lifts where there is too little, so it never makes a mix harsher or louder than it came in. AUTO GAIN keeps the level matched, and BYPASS is latency-matched so A/B comparisons are honest.
