Ancient Synth is a polyphonic synthesizer for the sounds no other synth in your plugin folder makes. It was built around one question: what would a synthesizer sound like if it had been designed in Ur, Thebes or Babylon instead of a lab in the 1970s? The answer is five synthesis engines, six historical tuning systems, thirteen scales, and a preset library named after the instruments, temples and gods of the ancient Near East.
FIVE ENGINES, ONE INSTRUMENT
Wavetable gives you smooth, morphing tones, from glassy pads to vocal-like leads, with a WT Morph control that sweeps the timbre in real time. FM brings eight algorithms and feedback for bells, metallic plucks, gongs and growling basses. Granular rebuilds sound from tiny grains, with eight source materials (Warm, Vocal, Hollow, Bell, Breathy, Drone, Crystal and Noise) and controls for grain size, scatter, density and pitch randomness, so you can turn a single note into a cloud, a sandstorm or a whispering choir. Karplus-Strong models a plucked string, with Body, Pick, Color and Sustain controls that take you from a tight lyre pluck to a long, ringing harp. Waveguide is a physical model with Stiffness and Damping for reeds, flutes and blown horns that breathe like real instruments.
TUNE IT LIKE THE ANCIENT WORLD
Most synths only know twelve-tone equal temperament. Ancient Synth also plays in Just Intonation, Pythagorean tuning, Sumerian Pentatonic, Egyptian Modal and Mesopotamian Diatonic, each with its own tuning root. On top of the tuning, a scale engine locks your playing to Chromatic, Pentatonic, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Locrian, Harmonic Minor, Phrygian Dominant, Double Harmonic, Hirajoshi, Maqam Rast or Maqam Nahawand. Pure intervals ring differently. Chords beat less, drones lock in, and melodies take on the colour of music that was old before Rome was founded. Switch back to equal temperament any time to sit with the rest of your track.
SHAPE EVERY NOTE
Seven filter types (LP12, LP24, High-pass, Band-pass, Notch, Comb and Ladder) with resonance, drive, key tracking and their own ADSR envelope. A full amp envelope. Two LFOs with five shapes, tempo sync and five destinations each (pitch, cutoff, FM depth, amp and pan). A four-slot modulation matrix for anything the LFOs can't reach. Up to eight-voice unison with stereo spread, glide, detune, and Poly, Mono or Legato modes.
BUILT-IN ARPEGGIATOR AND EFFECTS
The arpeggiator plays Up, Down, Up-Down, Random or As-Played at 1/4, 1/8, 1/16 or 1/32, with gate and swing. Hold a chord and it turns into a temple rhythm. The effects rack has reverb (size and damping), chorus, tempo-syncable delay, five distortion flavours (Hard, Warm, Tape, Bit and Fold), a three-band EQ and a stereo width control, so most sounds are finished inside the plugin.
